The California Dept. of Insurance announced it is issuing a mandatory one-year moratorium on insurance non-renewals and cancellations for homeowners impacted by the Southern California wildfires. While this is much needed news for SoCal, there is a lot of apprehension as to how the wildfires will affect insurance across the state. The current situation is still very fluid and it's too soon to tell, however, it should be expected that premiums will increase.
For now, I would advise all homeowners to call your insurance agent to review your current policy. You will want to get clear on your coverage and replacement cost to repair or replace your home and personal property. The worst mistake people make is under-insuring their home to save money.
Additionally, In the wake of the LA fires, it has come to our attention that some insurance claims are in dispute of being covered or have been denied because the Title is held in Trust, whereas the homeowner's insurance policy was under the individual homeowner's name.
Make sure to check with your insurance company as to your status. You may, or may not, need to add the Trust as an additional insured.
